Westlake High School Tennis Team 2012

I Need Your Help

As many of you know, I’m the tennis coach at Westlake High School.  I’m in the process of getting everything ready for our upcoming boys’ season that starts on February 25th.  I’m always amazed by how much there is to get done prior to the start of a new season—scheduling, paperwork, meetings, uniforms, etc.  But my biggest (and hardest) task is recruiting players.

How You Can Help

Have you grown up playing sports; especially ball sports like baseball, basketball, soccer, etc?  Can you throw, catch, and run.  Do you have good eye-hand coordination?  Are you looking for a lifetime sport?  Have you been cut by one of the big sports teams at school—baseball, basketball, football—but are a good athlete and want to be part of something great?  Do you have the drive to succeed?  Are you coachable?  If so, have I got a deal for you!

What’s In It for You?

Tennis is a difficult game to master; I’ll be honest, it’s not for everyone.  But for the right person it can be a great adventure.  We’ll teach you how to play the game of tennis correctly.  I say “correctly” because there are a lot of people out there teaching tennis that don’t have a clue.  I’ll use my nearly 40 years of tennis experience along with my extensive teaching/coaching knowledge to help you succeed.  You’ll learn how to hit all the strokes, you’ll learn the strategy of the game, you’ll get in shape, and you’ll have a lot of fun.  And, who knows, maybe you’ll be the next Roger Federer.

Our Program’s Goals

At Westlake “Thunder” Tennis our goals are to develop young men of high moral character, teach our players a game they can play for the rest of their lives, develop a winning program using locally developed players, eventually dominate tennis in the state of Utah, and have a lot of fun along the way.  If you’re willing to work hard, be coachable, respect your teammates, and learn all about what I consider the greatest sport in the world, I guarantee you success.

What’s the Next Step?

Our season’s player/parent meeting kicks everything off.  It’s scheduled for February 6th at 6:00 pm in the lecture hall right behind the library at Westlake High School.  This meeting will lay out everything you’ll need to know for the upcoming season.  Hopefully I’ll see you there!

Questions or Comments?

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments and I’d be glad to help you out.  You can either use the contact page or leave a comment below.

See you on the Courts!

Do you have tennis lessons for 9 year old boys?

CarlJune 2, 2013 at 8:33 pmReply

Hi Tyler,

Yes, I teach a lot of junior players, all ages. The high school also has a tennis camp for kids and you can find more information about the camp under the Westlake HS tab. Camp info is listed under the “Thunder” Girls Team subcategory. Just scroll down the page until you find the Westlake Tennis Summer Camp.

I have a 13 yr old boy and an 11 yr old girl that are interested in tennis. Is the summer camp the best way to start them off or where is the best way to start?

Hi Scott,
Yes, the summer camp would be a great starting point. They’ll be introduced to most aspects of the game and can decide if they’d like to continue with this great game of tennis.

Hi! We are moving to Saratoga Sorings from Las Vegas. My husband plays usda tennis in Las Vegas and my son takes three group lessons a week with a pro. He is 9. They both want to continue playing and our daughter 5 is ready to start playing. Where can we find pros, courts and my husband plays tournaments? Help! Thanks!

Hi Emily,
Sorry it’s taken me some time to get back with you, but I haven’t been checking the website lately. I’m happy to hear your family is moving to Saratoga Springs. Unfortunately, our tennis community in Saratoga Springs is very small and not growing at nearly the rate I’d love to see it grow. There are a number of clubs in Salt Lake, one in Lehi, and one in Orem that will have what you’re looking for. You can check them out through the following link: http://www.utahtennis.com/related_links/facilities/. I hope this helps.

Hi. I have a 14 and a 16 year old daughter. I would love to get them involved in a sport. They have never played tennis before. It is time for them to get involved in a physical activity. Where do we begin? Is there anything out there for beginners?

Hi Sharon,
Look into the city’s summer tennis program. I teach these lessons and it’s a good starting place–quality instruction for a cheap price!
